Founded in 1682, Norfolk grew up on the water, and its miles of lake, river, and bay front are central to many of its neighborhoods. The city's popular logo—an elegant young mermaid, which can be spotted in outdoor sites from Downtown to Ocean View—symbolizes 300 years of maritime and naval heritage and its modern reputation as a city on the move.
Attractions—such as the battleship U.S.S. Wisconsin, a salute to the city's long-standing relationship with the Navy, Nauticus, the Hampton Roads Naval Museum, and the new Cruise and Celebration Center dot Norfolk's easily-walked downtown waterfront. Here, tugboats and visiting cruise ships share the waters with sailboats and merchant ships. The waterfront is also home to Town Point Park, a recently refurbished green space that houses summer festivals, fountains, walkways, and tributes to the City's naval history. Other treasures—The Chrysler Museum, Norfolk Botanical Garden and the Virginia Zoological Park—are close by.
Norfolk is home to the Port Authority, Norfolk-Southern Railway, The Virginia Symphony, Old Dominion University, Eastern Virginia Medical School, Norfolk State University, Tides baseball and the Admirals hockey teams, state of the art research facilities, shipping companies, and an exuberant arts and cultural community.
So join us, won't you? There's much to celebrate!
Founded in 1752, the City of Portsmouth is located in southeastern, Virginia—just across the Elizabeth River from the City of Norfolk. With over 80 miles of shoreline, including mile marker zero of the Intracoastal Waterway, it is a quaint seaport City with an inviting atmosphere highlighted by historic architecture and unique natural assets. Designated as an official Coast Guard City, Portsmouth’s southern charm, mild climate and beautiful waterfront setting, characterize it as a regional gem in the heart of Hampton Roads.
Portsmouth is a diverse yet neighborly community, embracing both the richness of our heritage and the promise of the future in Hampton Roads. Downtown has retained its old southern charm and scale, as it has welcomed new development and revitalization. The historic waterfront downtown affords residents and visitors alike trendy shops and boutiques, chef-owned restaurants, art galleries and a range of entertainment and activities from the Farmers’ Market to First Weekend events and is home to the Children’s Museum of Virginia, the largest children’s museum in the state.

Elizabeth River Crossings (ERC) is delivering the Elizabeth River Tunnels Project, providing an efficient, linked transportation network between Norfolk and Portsmouth and improving connectivity in Hampton Roads. The project includes: a new two-lane tunnel under the Elizabeth River adjacent to the existing Midtown Tunnel; interchange improvements at Brambleton Avenue and Hampton Boulevard; extension of the Martin Luther King Freeway in Portsmouth from London Boulevard to I-264 and significant rehabilitation and safety improvements to the existing Midtown and Downtown Tunnels. Last July, ERC also assumed all responsibilities for the 24/7 incident response, roadway maintenance, snow removal and the ongoing operations and maintenance at the existing Downtown and Midtown tunnels and associated roadways. ERC is physically connecting the two partnering cities of Holidays in the City—Norfolk and Portsmouth, and they wish to remind everyone to travel safely this holiday season. Happy Holidays from ERC.

As a leader in the fast food industry, McDonald's has excelled in making a difference throughout the world. Their pride in “doing the right thing” is reflected in their efforts to operate in a greener manner, use sustainable resources, improve the standards and practices of animal welfare, and to continually recycle and renew. And for over 35 years, McDonald’s has been the largest corporate donor to the Ronald McDonald House Charities which now has 290 local chapters and 318 Ronald McDonald Houses in 57 nations. That funding has been instrumental in helping children and their families during times of need. At little to no cost, parents are able to be with their child and they can rest as a family, while their son or daughter receives life-saving medical treatment at the nearby hospital."
Pilot Media, featuring the region’s leading newspaper, the Virginian-Pilot, is Norfolk’s premier news-source. 350,000 people read this Pulitzer Prize winning journal for news, entertainment, information, and advertisements. You may also know Pilot Media by its two websites—HamptonRoads.com and PilotOnline.com, and its specialty publications such as Inside Business, Hampton Roads Visitors Guide, Distinction magazine, and many more. But it’s their contributions to the Joy Fund that bring smiles to over 20,000 children every year. The Virginian-Pilot strives to ensure that every little boy and girl in Hampton Roads is offered a new toy to unwrap during the holiday season through this charity program. The Joy Fund has spread goodwill and cheer throughout our community by directing 100% of every dollar donated towards the purchase of a child’s holiday wish. Help make that wish come true for a local child in our area. Donate to the Joy Fund through the Virginian-Pilot.
